“All debts owed to death: Economy in Simonides and Celan” in Parnassus. Poetry in review 23.1/2 (1998), 197-.
ISSN: 0048-3028
Notes from Source: The works of 5th century BC Greek poet Simonides of Keos and 20th Century Jewish Romanian writer Paul Celan is paralleled for their use of verbally economic style. While Simonides used stones on which to inscribe his poems; Celan uses metaphors of stones and geologic formation within his works. Other parallels investigated include life stories, puns, negatives, and exchanges.
