Notes from Source: The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of ‘A Visit From the Goon Squad’ and the forthcoming ‘Manhattan Beach’ reads only what she craves: ‘If I try to read a book I’m not hungry for, I won’t enjoy it.’ Anne Carson’s “Nox”; Pankaj Mishra’s “Age of Anger”; “The Gene,” by Siddhartha Mukherjee; “Strangers Drowning,” by Larissa MacFarquhar; and “The Death of Aztec Tenochtitlan, the Life of Mexico City,” by Barbara Mundy, an art historian, who finds traces of Aztec culture and life in the structure of Mexico City. What book might people be surprised to find on your shelves? I’m partial to epic poetry, which might be surprising given that I don’t write poetry at all.
