Notes from Source: The first mention of Simonides’ poetic fragment is found in Plato’s ‘Protagoras’ where Socrates and Protagoras attempt to analyze the poem on a philosophical basis. However, their discourse does not uncover the fragment’s meaning even though every aspect is closely examined. Socrates suggests in ‘Protagoras’ that ‘listening to a philosopher analyzing a poem is like watching a man attack a river with a sword,’ and this discourse upholds the folly of seeking truth in poetry.
